Comics - Nobody & Robot Dreams

I recently read some comics ( or Graphic Novels, if you're one of those people that thinks comics are for kids.)

I picked up Jeff Lemire's most recent offering, 'the Nobody' from Vertigo/DC .

It's pretty GREAT. The Nobody follows the H.G. Wells inspired, John Griffen, who comes to the small town of Large Mouth covered head to toe in bandages, & gets the local folk talking.

If you are a fan of Jeff Lemire's other works you will most definitely enjoy this. The Nobody doesn't stir up the emotion that Lemire's Essex County & Lost Dogs did, but rest assured it is evident from this graphic novel that Jeff is constantly evolving & improving as an artist & storyteller. Go check out 'the Nobody'.

I also read the not so recently released Robot Dreams, by SaraVaron, published by First Second publishing.

Robot Dreams is a silent story that follows the adventures of a dog & his robot pal, who he abandons at the beach and tries very hard to replace him. This book is GREAT and fun to read. You should definitely check it out.

drinking & drawing

I was having a few beers with Ben, & I was grilling him on why he hasn't been updating his blog. He's the father of 2 young boys, so I know it can be really difficult to get things done. I assumed he didn't get a chance to do much. Then he pulls out a stack of doodles, & roughs he's done recently. Ben's been drawing but didn't like any of the pics enough to post 'em.

A few more beers deep, we are sketching & inking over each others drawings. These are the results. They're not anything spectacular but it was a very cool exercise. you can see how sloppy we get the more we drink.

If you want to check out the blog Ben doesn't update, click here.

Who watches the Watchmen? well, uh, me.

So, I finally watched Watchmen. It's too long.

I was never a huge fan of the comic. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but not as much as most people do.

I watched the movie, & all I really thought was, 'This is much better as a comic', & ' Malin Akerman is super hot' .

I am glad I got to see more Malin Akerman naked. I liked her in 'the Heartbreak Kid' & 'Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle' even though those movies are garbage.

Watchmen is PRETTYGOOD.

also, I did this Dr. Manhattan sketch while I watched.

warm up sketch - New Robin

Although I have yet to read the new Batman & Robin series by Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely, I have seen promo images & I absolutely love Quitely's take on the awkward teenage looking Robin. I don't really know who is in the Batman & Robin suits but I really don't care as long as Quitely is drawing, I will be buying. Here's my ink brush version.

Eastbound & Down!

My new favorite show.

If you haven't seen Eastbound & Down, do yourself a favor & check it out. Just watch one episode, you'll probably be hooked. There's only 1 season so far & a total of 6 episodes. Danny McBride plays Kenny Powers, a former world champion baseball player who is now a washed up substitute teacher. He is a hilarious, over confident, redneck, who thinks he is better than everyone else. Katy Mixon who plays Kenny's former girlfriend & current pursuit April is just wonderful to watch with her big breasts, cute face, and southern accent. Andrew Daly ( Semi-Pro) plays the super dork principle, & is god damn hilarious. Look for episodes 2 & 4 that feature Will Ferrell as Ashley Schaeffer, BMW dealership owner & enemy to Kenny Powers. Ashley Schaeffer is a tribute to Ric Flair , in his 70's styled platinum blond hair, North Carolina setting, & dropping those very quiet woooo's.

Even though I'm not the biggest Watchmen fan, I have always thought Rorshach was pretty cool & I realised at the last Comiccon I attended that I've never sketched any of the Watchmen. Someone asked me for a Rorshach and I really liked how it turned. I was kinda sad that I had to give it away. The very next person I sketched for asked for a Rorshach as well, & again I liked how it turned out. I did this one with an ink brush. I think, perhaps, I will draw some more Watchmen.

Upon Joel's recommendation, I picked up Logan: Black & White Edition HC, by Brian Vaughan & Eduardo Risso. I really dig this book. It is GREAT . Even if you're not super impressed with the story, which I was, you will be blown away by Risso's version of Logan & World War II era Japan. You can get this book in color or B&W. With Risso's use of heavy shadow & negative space, why wouldn't you want the black & white?

Happy 71st Birthday BOLO!!!

Today a great man by the name of Bolo Yeung turns 71 years old.
If you do not know who Bolo is, then I pity you & question your existence.
If you've seen Enter the Dragon then you know him as the Asian guy with the worlds largest pectorals who gets his ass handed to him by John Saxon.
But Bolo is most famous as 'Chong Li' the chalk throwing arch enemy of Jean Claude Van Dammes 'Frank Dux' in the 1988 masterpiece 'Bloodsport'.
Bolo was a friend to Bruce Lee, a wonderful heel in many great films such as Bloodsport, Bloodfight, Double Impact ( once again triple round housed by JCVD ), Shootfighter, Ironheart, Tigerclaws, Shootfighter2, Tiger Claws 2, & most importantly a hero to me.
Bolo was born in China in 1938 but still works out for 2 hours a day, is the chairman for the Hong Kong Gym Business Association.
We love you Bolo, Happy Birthday.

It's here.

I'm pretty excited to read 3 pages featuring my artwork (Jimmy Aquino's script) in the new FAT CHUNK 2: ZOMBIES anthology, from Slave Labor Graphics. It is a great book, full of many different stories by a ton of great artists.

Please go check it out. it's only $12.95 for 134 pages of zombie goodness.

you can ask your local comic shop to order it if they don't have a copy. Just give them the Diamond order code APR090632 .

Or you can order from a regular book store, just give 'em the ISBN #9781593621384 .

Here's what I'll do, If anyone buys a copy of Fat Chunk 2 : Zombies & emails me a picture of them holding it, I will draw them a free zombie-related commission of their choice.
