25 Questions : DYL

If anyone is a regular reader of this blog you will recognize the man who comments here more than anyone else. Dyl is a fellow artist and friend. Enjoy.

1) Who are you & what do you do?

I'm Dyl, I have a blog, you can put the link if you want, I work at Shopper's lifting stuff, moving it and then arranging it on shelves, super important stuff, and I also attempt drawing/writing/music and blogging. I don't do any of these things exceedingly well just yet but...at least I am good at self-deprecating, I am going pro.2) Seen any good movies lately?

Battle Los Angeles in Ultra AVX and Chasing Amy for the 1000th time. I thought Ultra AVX was too cool to pass up, walls shook, somewhat known actors blew up aliens and I managed to be out 20 bucks even on a cheap Tuesday. Chasing Amy never gets old, it's one of those movies you still can't help but fantasize about different ways the scenes could have gone, makes everything I read/watch so much better.

3) What are you listening to?

Joshua Radin, City and Colour, Stay by Coal (I could never find anything else by her, she's a mystery) and Shad (a little bit of Toronto rap two feet away at the Juno Block Party Thursday). They're all really good especially if you're a patriot for the red, white and...yeah just red and white.

4) What do you do to relax?

I don't relax. I blog about being stressed all the time. But I do have this sense of ease after finishing a good comic strip.
5) What's your favorite book?

Like real book? No pictures besides the cover? A Confederacy of Dunces. The guy wrote it, killed himself and his mother took it to the publisher, it got some critical acclaim, it's a masterpiece if you're weird enough to enjoy it. It's long though, if you read the funnybooks, stay away, far away.6) you order a pizza all to yourself, what toppings do you get?
As much dead animals as they'll put on it, I'll throw a cow, a pig, parts of a chicken and whatever animal they actually use to make the food at McDonalds.

7) What's your favorite fruit?

I don't really eat fruit...umm...bananas? I guess. I've yet to evolve fully.

8) Favourite junk food?

Hmm...Coffee Crisp Bites. They taste how I always wanted the bars to taste, delicious and chocolaty but you can actually taste the coffee flavour!
9) What's the best concert you've ever been to?

City and Colour/Shad/Hannah Georgas on Thursday for free front row. Dallas Green actually stopped during his encore to call a guy a fucking idiot and tell security to make him leave. Imagine being the guy who was like "yeah I am going to kick this random guy's ass" to 100s of people chanting go away on the word of a modern day master of the 6 string? Insane.

10) Biggie or Tupac?

Biggie, easily. Tupac I always felt kind of hit or miss and yeah the message is great and everything but like...I need the entertainment and the skill, Biggie would just make scenarios and rhyme schemes above and beyond I strive for. The stuff I listen to now tries to find a middleground (like Shad, Common, etc.) by having great complicated rhyme schemes and inventiveness but really delivering a great message.

11) Who's your childhood crush?

I used to like the co-host of The Zone on YTV, Sugar, she was hot. Apparently she doesn't actually talk like that. Oh and Daffney, she is still a wrestler and often is my iPod background, I was a freaky weird kid I guess?

12) If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?

Probably somewhere really bland with my comic supplies, and quiet, Saskatoon, just to like be in Canada but not surrounded by annoying people. A place where I can go and people are like "where are ya from?" and I am like "Markham, it's near Toronto" and them to be like "oh cool" instead of "I mean besides like that and Canadian, because you know, that doesn't count, only places your parents nor you have nor ever will visit count because someone over 100 years ago was born there then wanted to be really cold and moved here." I like the word "nor", I am going to bring it back.

13) Any TV shows you're watching right now ?

I love Californication, TNA Impact! and Jersey Shore. Californication is smart, a little dirty, witty, inspiring and relatable. TNA Impact! is what I always wanted in a wrestling show as a kid, younger guys competing for lesser titles while WCW and WWF icons clash, Kurt Angle vs. Sting for the World Title with Hulk Hogan as the special guest referee. I always felt WCW should have won. Jersey Shore entertains me to no end, a lot of people hate it and find it being a follower but, if noone liked it, I'd still love it, I just like the characters, the only way it would be better if it wasn't a reality show.

14) What's your guilty pleasure?

I just knew this one too. I was telling someone. I love so many lame things I forget what was actually lame enough for me to be embarrassed about it.
You know what? That was my girlfriend, her guilty pleasure is liking the same stuff as me, atleast I got to expose someone!

15) Favorite super hero(es)?

My favourite super heroes? Umm..I am a big Invincible fan, I used to be more of a I wish I was than am one kind of fan before, like I had read a bit but now that I finally sat down and read a lot of it, it was very expected, it's like when you choose your new favourite flick before you even see it. I love The Maxx too, that's how me and the pro interviewer himself started talking for a good portion. There's a bunch more but those two work.

16) What pisses you off?

Rude people. Ignorant people. Like just lots of people.

17) Rank these hairstyles from best to worst, fauxhawk, comb over, mushroom cut, mullet.

Fauxhawk I happen to be rocking this very second.
Mullet needs a comeback in pro wrestling and music followed by regular people.
Comb over I can respect if done right.
Mushroom cut? Only on girls. Is that weird? Good.

18) Favorite Saturday Night Live cast member (past or present) & why?

Ever? Hmm...
I loved John Belushi when he was on it.
Like he was the only one I always felt that was at his funniest on SNL.
All the others just annoyed me but I liked when they made their own career after.

19) Saturday morning cartoon you had to watch?

Fighting Foodons and Ultimate Muscle.
Like there was X-Men and Power Rangers but I never actually woke up on time for them, those two I never missed an episode, the best part was that they actually began and ended in a row every week, it was crazy being a kid having that happen, I love stories that start and end.

20) Craziest place you've ever done the 'no pants dance' ?

Hahahaha...umm...that's a good question.
I always felt the riskiest when people were near more than placement.
Like they're so close, tehehe, but not caught.
Can you believe chicks like me?

21) Beverly Hills 90210 or Saved by the Bell?

Beverly Hills 90210! Has anyone chose that other than me? I'm really manly.
22) Favorite artist(s)?

Wow, toughy.
I am going to say that it changes weekly, monthly, all the time.
I really just love Chester Gould though.
Cory Walker I thought as a sequential artist might actually be my favourite, like just the show of motion.
Umm...I also loved the days of studios. Joe Shuster, Bob Kane, CC Beck and their bunch of underlings trying to mimic them on big books.

23) If you were on death row what would your last meal be?

My Mom's ribs, Danny's Fish and Chips and for dessert...think about what Marv had.

24) 20 years from now, you will be _____________?

Married, semi-regular job and comic art. Kids who think I am lame. Wife to match. Talking to Shane about my 1 millionth blog about how productive I am going to be one day. Just kidding about that last part...I hope.

25) How awesome are you? Feel free to use a scale of 1 - 10.

11 is my favourite number.
1+10 works better for me.

25 Questions : Joel Buxton

I'm happy to present a Q & A with my Awesome Marcus Ninja co-creator & good friend Joel Buxton.

Joel is a great writer, awesome stand up comic, & well, I've never seen him play bass, so I'll say, an ok bassist.

Check Joel's super helpful/entertaining stand up comedy blog. Trust me, it's better than the blog you are currently reading

Here we go,

1) Who are you & what do you do?

My name's Joel Buxton.
I'm a stand-up comic based in Toronto. I do a lot of writing, including a webcomic called Awesome Marcus Ninja, and a blog called Premise PUNCH Tag. I play bass in a rock band called Apple Pi.
I also have a day job, but who cares about that?

2) Seen any good movies lately?

I only watch good movies because I have the attention span of a gnat. Recently I enjoyed checking out True Grit (with you), Insomnia (late, I know, but it was the one Christopher Nolan film missing from my repertoire), and the Scott Pilgrim movie which I thought didn't get the props it should've.

3) What are you listening to?

For pump ups on the way to sets, I like Marc Ronson, Daft Punk, NIN, and stand-up comedy albums from comics I admire. For relaxing, I love Zero 7, Jose Gonzales, Metric, Soul Coughing, and my fundamentals, The Beatles and Radiohead.

4) What do you do to relax?

Sleep, read, chat with pals, or murder people in video games.

5) What's your favourite book?

Tough call, books are awesome. Tie between Atlas Shrugged (no I'm not an Objectivist), Breakfast of Champions, and Moby Dick (I'm not bullshitting you, I actually have read it and love it).

6) You order a pizza all to yourself, what toppings do you get?

If there's no topping limit, everything that doesn't have eyes. If there's some kind of arbitrary cap, I'd say broccoli (the King of vegetables), feta cheese, sundried tomatoes, and artichokes.

7) What's your favourite fruit?

Fruit is bullshit, I don't eat it. But technically a green pepper is a fruit 'cause it's got seeds. So I'll say GP.

8) Favourite junk food?

Poutine fo sho. I used to make my own gravies I was so into it.

9) What's the best concert you've ever been to?

Zero 7 at Phoenix in Toronto. They just killed it. And my friends when I wasn't looking talked a techie into giving them the night's setlist for me. Good times.

10) Biggie or Tupac?

They both make really valid points about bitches, popping caps, and the game. Who am I to choose?

11) Who's your childhood crush?

This is embarrassing. I really liked Larisa Oleynik. She's this obscure actress who never went anywhere that was in a kid's show called "The Secret World of Alex Mack." I'm over her now, and finally ready to love again.

12) If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?

On earth? Probably London or Moscow.

Off earth? Oa, son.

13) Any TV shows you're watching right now ?

Always Sunny, 30 Rock, The Office, Deadwood
, and I'm about to get heavy into The Pacific.

14) What's your guilty pleasure?

I get sincerely into things that nobody likes. It starts off as kind of an ironic thing, but always evolves into real, joyful love. Right now that thing is yo-yo tricks. Seriously, the yo yo has gotten crazy in the last ten years.

15) Favourite super hero(es)?

Judge Dredd. So underrated in North America. Spidey was my fave growing up. These days I'm really getting into Jack Kirby's Fourth World stuff. Scud the Disposable Assassin, The Tick, and Grendel are also all awesome characters.

16) What pisses you off?

Rude people, and arrogant people. Also people who have a mean streak, you can see it from a mile away. Aside from that I try to stay pretty zen, dude.

17) Rank these hairstyles from best to worst, fauxhawk, comb over, mushroom cut, mullet.

All of those are great haircuts to a bald man such as myself. You bastards should be happy you've got hair to abuse.

18) Favourite Saturday Night Live cast member (past or present) & why?

If we look at sheer number of awesome sketches I gotta go with Phil Hartman. The guy was unstoppable. I also love Horatio Sanz, just looking at him cracks me up.

19) Saturday morning cartoon you had to watch?

That X-Men cartoon I thought was the boom. I also really enjoyed Care Bears. Not 'cause I'm a priss, but even at a young age I found it hilarious that these cuddly bears that were all about love would gang up at the end of the episode and shoot a beam of love out of their chests, disintegrating the villain violently. The best mixed message ever.

20) Craziest place you've ever done the 'no pants dance' ?

You got me. I've never done the 'no pants dance.' And it's too late for New Years Resolutions, too.

21) Beverly Hills 90210 or Saved by the Bell?

Both amazing with amazing theme songs. Saved by the Bell by a hair, but only because of Max's Diner, the episode where Slater becomes a cook, and the line, "I'm so... I'm so... SCARED!"

22) Favourite artist(s)?

Frank Quitely, Carlos Esquerra, John Romita Jr., Gabriel Ba, Moebius

23) If you were on death row what would your last meal be?

The poutine routine, bro! I'd have to make the gravy though...

24) 20 years from now, you will be _____________?

Laughing at my younger self's predictions

25) How awesome are you? Feel free to use a scale of 1 - 10.

These go to eleven.

Thanks Buxton. Keep on keepin' on.

The last movie I saw in the theatre was "Up', which I liked - though why Pixar needs to kill off a character in the first 10 minutes of a kids movie is beyond me... but, whatever.

Eminem's Up in Smoke Tour. Go ahead and judge me. It was awesome.

Biggie. Tupac's hawt and smart and stuff, but seriously, Biggie had way better hooks and beats. You know it's true.

Embarassingly, I had a crush on Ricky Schroder from Silver Spoons. I'm so happy this is being published.

12) If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?

13) Any TV shows you're watching right now ?

I am watching True Blood online and House. And remain in scowling mode over Heroes. What a waste.

15) Favourite super hero(es)?

Every bathroom at Art Camp during high school. (Camp Walden through the TDSB).

21) Beverly Hills 90210 or Saved by the Bell?

The ORIGINAL Beverly Hills 90210. We used to gather in the common room at university and watch 90210 and then Melrose Place. What a bunch of geeks. The boys liked it too though. Or they were there because the girls were there. It's hard to tell.

22) Favourite artist(s)?

Tara McPherson, Audrey Kawasaki, Andre Jolicoeur, Chris Uminga.

23) If you were on death row what would your last meal be?

Crab, Lobster, Shrimp, Mussels... mmmm seafood.

25 Questions with Bloody Brian Bot

Let's spend a few minutes to get to know artist & author of the Bloody Mess blog,

1) Who are you & what do you do?

I am Brian Boodnarine, and I may or may not be currently employed.

2) Seen any good movies lately?

I was just talking about this last night...the last movie I saw in theatres was the Dark Knight, and as much as I loved the movie and was happy that I saw it before all the cool kids could ruin the Joker's lines for me with very poor interpretations of them, that's still no reason to shut the door, like "I'm done", close up shop with the whole "seeing another movie" mentality. I like documentaries a lot though, if you want to know which types are my favourite, just ask Shane which ones he would never watch "cuz dey iz conspeeraseez!!1"

3) What are you listening to?

I don't mean to sound like a Grandpa, but in my day, you could turn on the radio and enjoy it for a good while without running for your burnt cd collection. I love hip hop, but I'm tired of defending it. At its core , everyone can identify with it, its just that now you gotta dig a little bit for it, even the major label artists. But we're living in an easy time, where if you felt like sampling an artist's work while you're reading this, you could just google Little Brother, or Immortal Technique and BAM!...bliss. 4) What do you do to relax?

I like to listen to music, draw, look up weird, interesting stuff, usually at the same time. My cousin just reminded me that I can play guitar, and I used to play drums at my boi's house until he had a beautiful daughter...I still think she'd be ok with some noise cancelling headphones, but whatever. And videogames, Ps3, Psp, once in a while with some friends, if we're feeling nostalgic,I'll bust out the old school systems like Sega Master System, or Super nintendo.

5) What's your favourite book?

Twilight. I'm kidding, Catch 22, Hamlet, yeah I said it, but I haven't read a book in a whiiiile...it's not like I don't have the patience for it, cause I could read articles for hours when I'm into something, but I think my problem is I wanna know everything, I wanna be everywhere, I wanna do everything at the same time, so that might have something to do with my need to switch it up sometimes. Fun Fact: I'm like that with sex positions, too 6) You order a pizza all to yourself, what toppings do you get?

chicken, mushrooms, and the 3rd one always takes longer to decide than the first 2. By the way, the operators LOVE when you can't make up your mind.

7) what's your favourite fruit?

I usually eat a fruit salad everyday. I love fruits, so as many as i can fit into a big cereal bowl is my favourite fruit.

8) Favourite junk food?

Cheetos. It's capitalized, to show respect.

9) What's the best concert you've ever been to?

I'm conflicted, cause I love the Alice in Chains and Tool shows, cause they're my top 5 artists, but I think the one with Static-X, Staind, Linkin Park, and Stone Temple Pilots might be it. Big drunk show+big drunk people=big drunk energy.

10) Biggie or Tupac?

Biggie for the flow, 'Pac for the lyrics. Both brilliant at painting words with pictures, with these hip hop scriptures.

11) Who's your childhood crush?

Jessica Alba and Alyssa Milano. Can't go wrong with either of them today. It's funny, a couple days ago, I saw the Fresh Prince episode, where Carlton and Will talked about their childhood crushes being Barbara Walters, then for some reason that reminded me of how my first crush on a celebrity was Paula Abdul. I think now, crushing on her might be the equivelant of Amy Winehouse.

12) If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?

Everywhere, to do everything. Seriously, I would time travel to critical points in history to make sure I had a hand in shaping everything, except volcanoes, cause thats just fucking dangerous.

13) Any TV shows you're watching right now ?

Nothing with any form of regularity but I like pretty much anything on Adult Swim. I heart Anime as well.

14) What's your guilty pleasure?

It's extremely rare when I can do this due to my surprisingly strong will power, but heading down to Popeyes, getting the 5 pc chicken strip combo with some friends, head home and play online games with those greasy friends until we can't speak anymore from grease congestion. 15) Favourite super hero(es)?

Spawn, Spidey, Batman, Darkness

16) What pisses you off?

I really hate hypocrites, or people trying hard to be what they're not. It was ok for 9th grade, but I love the art of conversation with friends, new people, people living on the street, everyone has a story that no one else experienced. This gets skewed when people become too afraid to express themselves to share with people, even in conversation, cause some would rather lie to blend in than be truthful and stand out as an individual.

17) Rank these hairstyles from best to worst, fauxhawk, comb over, mushroom cut, mullet.

fauxhawk, mushroom cut, comb over, mullet. Tough, tough question, made even tougher since I had a mushroom cut for years haha.
18) Favourite Saturday Night Live cast member (past or present) & why?

Farley, Belushi, and I still have love for Norm Mcdonald. Check out the Bob Saget roast, if you share that love.

19) Saturday morning cartoon you had to watch?

TMNT at like 7am. Dude, Saturday mornings used to have everything you ever wanted to watch , packed into like 5 or 6 hours of pajama wearing, cereal crunching goodness. Transformers, GI joe, Xmen, gargoyles, C.O.P.S, Thundercats...I could go on and on. Then you'd still get to enjoy the day outside, cause thats what kids did before computers ran their lives.

20) Craziest place you've ever done the 'no pants dance' ?

Parks, fields, outside establishments, strangers backyards. That last one sounded extra dirty.
21) Beverly Hills 90210 or Saved by the Bell?

Saved by the Bell if I had to choose, but I was never a big fan of either(!)

22) Favourite artist(s)?

Yoshitaka Amano, Yoji Shinkawa, Finch, Mcfarlane, Turner (r.i.p.), Cassaday, Hitch, Lee, Portacio and any artists who still give free sketches. Much Love.

23) If you were on death row what would your last meal be?

Something, with Popeyes and Cheetos (both capitalized). I used to pose this question to my friends, and it would always include steak and lobster. I would try to sqeeze a little bit of everything on the plate or whatever they serve it on. 24) 20 years from now, you will be _____________?

Going through a midlife crisis. Seriously, I make a conscious effort to learn from mistakes and appreciate the life I was given by unknown forces, or known biology. Hopefully, I'll get to keep my morals and my hair won't try to escape from my scalp.

25) How awesome are you? Feel free to use a scale of 1 - 10.

My humble side says 7, but my awesome side says 11.5!!!!!!!!!!11111!!!!1!!
