WEC 48 Aldo vs Faber !!!!

WEC 48 - Aldo vs Faber , April 24, 2010, Arco Arena, Sacramento, California, United States


This is an amazing card, probably the best of the year, & I really hope everyone watches. I have yet to see a WEC event that disapoints.

WEC Featherweight Champion JOSE ALDO VS. URIJAH FABER - Aldo is a beast & as much as I like Faber I think he gets lit up. Aldo by TKO, rd. 1. If it doesn't end early, the styles of these 2 elite featherweights will make for a great battle.


WEC Lightweight Champion BENSON HENDERSON VS. DONALD CERRONE - These guys had a great fight the first time and I'm expecting more of the same. This time, I think Cerrone will win the judges scorecards. Cerrone by decision.

MIKE BROWN VS. MANNY GAMBURYAN - Gamburyan is tough so he'll stay in the fight but he'll lose every round. Brown by decision

ANTHONY NJOKUANI VS. SHANE ROLLER - This is a very tough pick. Njokuani has the much better stand up and tons of power in his hands and feet, but Roller is a much better wrestler. Roller's coach, Marc Laimon spends tons of time watching video on his opponents & I'm sure he will have a good gameplan for Roller to get it to the ground, where he can beat up or sub Njokuani. Would I be surprised if Roller gets his clock cleaned? No, but the safe pick is Roller by submission, rd. 1.

ANTONIO BANUELOS VS. SCOTT JORGENSEN - I scored the first fight in favor of Jorgensen and thought he got screwed out of the decision. This time around I don't think it'll be that close. Jorgensen has gotten steadily better, while Banuelos has remained pretty much the same fighter. Jorgensen by submission, rd. 2 and look for him to move into a title shot if he impresses.

LEONARD GARCIA VS. CHAN SUNG JUNG - Don't expect any great technique, this is gonna be a wild crazy fight filled with windmill punches galore. I'm taking 'the Korean Zombie' by entertaining decision.

ALEX KARALEXIS VS. ANTHONY PETTIS - Pettis might actually kick Karalexis' head clean off his body. Pettis by KO, rd. 1.

DEMETRIOUS JOHNSON VS. BRAD PICKETT - This is a great fight. While Pickett is a tough dude, I feel like Johnson has the more rounded game. Johnson by decision.

CHAD MENDES VS. ANTHONY MORRISON - Mendes is gonna take Morrison down and sub him & he's gonna look a lot better than his last performance. Mendes by submission, rd. 1.

TAKEYA MIZUGAKI VS. RANI YAHYA - I'll take Mizugaki to beat up Rani on the feet, get some takedowns, and stay out of submission trouble. Yahya gets tired pretty quick and I think he's gonna get hurt. Mizugaki TKO, rd. 2.

TYLER TONER VS. BRANDON VISHER - This is another very tough to call. Toner has some great striking and if this stays on the feet we'll be in for a treat. I have to take Visher, simply because of Toner's lack of takedown defence. Toner by decision.

NEW Story arc !!!!!

I have to ask everyone to go check out the new story arc at Phil McClorey's Furious Comics.

Phil not only writes, letters, & puts together a great horror anthology called 'the Book of Methuselah' which you can pick up from him at any Toronto area convention, but he also gives it away free one page a week at Furious Comics.

Strikeforce : Nashville on CBS tonight

I've been skipping some Strikeforce cards with my fight picks because I find them to be very lopsided and it's just too esy to pick winners. Now, I won't be picking all or most of this card because I am not familiar with most of the fighters on the undercard and only the 3 Championship fights actually interest me. I am very actually very intrigue by these 3 matchups, hence the post.

Champ Jake Shields vs. Dan Henderson (for middleweight title) - I like Jake Shields but he isn't a middleweight, he is a top 10 welterweight. I could see Shields maybe submitting Hendo but more than likely, Hendo is gonna beat him up reall good. I won't be surprised by a TKO in rounds 3 or 4, but I'll take 'Decision' Dan by decision.

Champ Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki (for Strikeforce lightweight title) - I love Aoki, & I am so happy he is fighting stateside but this doesn't look good for the #2 ranked lightweight in the world. Aoki's Japanese style Jiu-Jitsu is incredible to watch, & I would love to se him sub Gil but I can't pick him to win because of his chin. Melendez trains out of Caesar Gracie's camp & should know enough to stay out of submissions, his striking has gotten so much better & I can see him tagging Aoki & putting hium to sleep. Melendez by KO, rd. 1.

Champ Gegard Mousasi vs. Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal (for light heavyweight title) - This is fight that I'm most excited for. I really don't know how this plays out. Mousasi is such a naturally talented fighter but Mo is an amazing wrestler with a keen eye for his opponents styles and habits. I'm gonna pick based on experience and say that 'King Mo' is too green and Gegard will get the decision, but i"m not confident in either pick. I just hope it's a great fight.

UFC 112 Recap & thoughts

I got 8 of 10 picks correctly (Paul Taylor pulled out of his fight with John Gunderson).

I had a lot of trouble finding a place to watch this in New York. I found a sports bar that had a sign that read 'WE PLAY ALL SPORTS', & when I asked if they were showing UFC 112, the gentleman behind the bar replied, 'What's that?'.

I did read the play-by-play online and talked to a MoCCA attendee that also happened to be a Renzo Gracie Jiu Jitsu student, and he kinda filled me in on what went down.

Back home in Toronto I watched it and here's my thoughts,

Results & Thoughts :

•Anderson Silva def. Demian Maia via unanimous decision – retains UFC middleweight title - This fight was not as bad as I had heard. Anderson acted ridiculous. He clearly couldve taken out Maia whether he was engaging or counter striking and it is very frustrating as a fan to watch him have little fits because Maia not straight boxing with him. I cant wait to see Anderson vs Chael Sonnen. Sonnen doesn't fuck around.

•Frankie Edgar def. B.J. Penn via unanimous decision (50-45, 48-47, 49-46) – becomes new lightweight champion - Right away something was up. Penn had his knee bandage, he didn't look as lean and muscular as he did in his last 2 performances, and he certainly looked uninspired. Leading me to believe that because of his knee he had trouble with his cardio. I thought, great, if BJ loses he is gonna make excuses. Even though this was a sluggish BJ, who was lacking that killer instinct and was not getting in and out of exchanges as quickly as we know he can, I still thought he got the better of the exchanges for the first 4 rounds. Edgar was more active but wasn't landing like Penn was. I scored the fight 49-46 for Penn. I could wouldnt argue if you said Frankie won the last 2 rounds but he did not win that fight. Judge Doug Crosby scored the fight 50-45 for Edgar. Everyone is talking about how Anderson is a joke now, but the biggest joke is Crosby's scorecard. Crosby is a joke with a terrible track record and should never judge again. I am not a BJ Penn fan. I dont like that everytime BJ loses he has a lame excuse. Since Penn's loss to St. Pierre he has seemed more humble & I am very surprised he hasn't made any excuses. The UFC is now talking about an immediate rematch and I think we'll see the real Penn show up and get his belt back. Like him or not, BJ is still the best 155'er in the world.

•Matt Hughes def. Renzo Gracie via TKO (strikes) - Round 3, 4:40 - Hughes does look like a shell of his former self. I thought there was still a lot of fight left in him but I was incorrect. Renzo was clearly over matched and Hughes stuck to a very conservative gameplan. It worked but I dont feel like I need to see him in the octagon anymore.

•Rafael dos Anjos def. Terry Etim via submission (armbar) - Round 2, 4:40 - dos Anjos is a badass. He showed great patience and experience in the first round, getting out of a guillotine choke. His kimura transition to armbar finish of Etim was beautiful. dos Anjos has been getting better and better each time out.
•Mark Munoz def. Kendall Grove via TKO (strikes) - Round 2, 2:50 - Munoz still showed tha he has a ton of holes in his game. The only reason he won this fight is because of Grove's glass chin. I was not impressed at all with Munoz.

•Phil Davis def. Alexander Gustafsson via submission (anaconda choke) - Round 1, 4:55 - There is nothing better in the world than watching a perfectly executed anaconda choke. I can't stop rewatching this. I can't wait to see the ever-improving Phil Davis back in the Octagon.
•Rick Story def. Nick Osipczak via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

•DaMarques Johnson def. Brad Blackburn via TKO (strikes) - Round 3, 2:08

•Paul Kelly def. Matt Veach via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 2, 3:41

•Jon Madsen def. Mostapha Al-Turk via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
