Strikeforce: Diaz vs Cyborg - JAN-29-2011

Strikeforce - Diaz vs. Cyborg
January 29, 2011
HP Pavilion, San Jose, California, United States

This is not a deep card but I like the top 3 matchups, and well....Herschel Walker. I'm just gonna throw out my picks for the main card.

Strikeforce Welterweight Championship
Nick Diaz vs. Evangelista 'Cyborg' Santos
- This should be a good brawl. Both guys have Jiu Jitsu chops a solid striking game & good chins. I think Diaz's heavy volume & variety of strikes will catch up to Cyborg and wear him down. I'll take Diaz by TKO, rd. 3.
Strikeforce Middleweight Championship
Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza vs. Robbie Lawler
- Jacare is the better fighter here. He should be able to use his Judo & Jiu Jitsu skills to get Lawler down and secure top control. I'm smelling upset though. Since Jacare's striking game is so much improved, I think he'll be too confident and may not be so quick to hit the mat & that will lose him the fight. Lawler has big power, combined with Jacare's suspect chin, I see Lawler landing a big shot to put away Souza & become the Strikeforce Middleweight champ. Lawler by TKO, rd. 1.

Roger Gracie vs. Trevor Prangley - This is a great match up. While I'm rooting for Gracie, I see Prangley staying out of submission danger and exploiting Roger's weak stand up skills. If Gracie can get Prangley to the mat he could tap him but I'm leaning Prangley by decision. I really hope this is a good fight.
Herschel Walker vs. Scott Carson - I'm not super interested in this matchup other than seeing the insane physique of the 48 year old Walker & how he's improved since his last fight, a year ago. I'm not familiar with the 4-1 Carson so I assume he'll lose to Walker by, let's say, decision. I think it'd be pretty great if Carson ripped up Walker.

Painting #2

This is the second of my recent paintings. There's three pics with different lighting because it was difficult to get a good one. I used a glossy gel mixed in with the paint to get a really thick texture.

THOR!!!!

I was commissioned by Danny Truong to do a Thor in his new costume. The pic is too large for my scanner and I don't have time to scan it in pieces and put it together so this is a photo of the piece from my camera. I am currently accepting commissions, email me for details prettygoodcomics@gmail.com. thx

UFC : Fight For the Troops 2 !!

Matchups:

Melvin Guillard vs. Evan Dunham - Guillard has improved a ton since joining the Greg Jackson camp and will be a very tough fight. I like Dunham in this though. He is a better prospect who will be in the title picture real soon. Dunham gets better every fight and I'll take him to win a close decision over Guillard.
Matt Mitrione vs. Tim Hague - I'm surprised Hague is back in the UFC again. I doubt this will be a thrilling fight. Both guys will never be title contenders and are barely UFC quality fighters. I'll go with Mitrione by sub., rd 1.
Mark Hominick vs. George Roop - I think this fight is gonna be a lot closer than everyone thinks. Roop has found his spot at 145 and is improving every time he fights. This should be a stand up battle with Hominick being more technical and winning a decision.
Patrick Barry vs. Joey Beltran - 2 heavyweights (that should be fighting at 205) with good striking skills. As long as it stays standing Barry should have the advantage. I'll take Barry by TKO, rd. 2.
Cole Miller vs. Matt Wiman - I love this fight. It's gonna be a battle. I'll take Miller by sub, rd. 3. I think we're looking at a major 'Fight of the Night' candidate.
DaMarques Johnson vs. Michael Guymon - I won't be surprised to see the loser of this one get cut from the UFC. I think 'Joker' Guymon has the more well rounded game and has the grappling chops to pull out a submission on the Ultimate Fighter alum Johnson. Guymon by submission, rd. 2.
Yves Edwards vs. Cody McKenzie -
I don't know much about this kid from the Ultimate Fighter season 12 except that I've seen GIF's of him getting KO'd by a Nam Phan. I'll take the veteran Edwards by TKO, rd. 1.
Rani Yahya vs. Mike Thomas Brown - Brown is gonna be a beast against the Jiu Jitsu ace. I know Brown hates coming off a loss and will be looking to end this one quick. Yahya is gonna be undersized & I don't even think he'll be able to get it to the ground where he needs it. Brown by TKO, rd. 1.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm not familiar with the rest of these fighters so I'm just gonna flip a coin on the last 3 picks.

Will Campuzano vs. Chris Cariaso - Campuzano by decision
Waylon Lowe vs. Willamy Freire - Freire by decision
Amilcar Alves vs. Charlie Brenneman -
Brenneman by decision

25 Questions : Joel Buxton

I'm happy to present a Q & A with my Awesome Marcus Ninja co-creator & good friend Joel Buxton.

Joel is a great writer, awesome stand up comic, & well, I've never seen him play bass, so I'll say, an ok bassist.

Check Joel's super helpful/entertaining stand up comedy blog. Trust me, it's better than the blog you are currently reading

Here we go,

1) Who are you & what do you do?

My name's Joel Buxton.
I'm a stand-up comic based in Toronto. I do a lot of writing, including a webcomic called Awesome Marcus Ninja, and a blog called Premise PUNCH Tag. I play bass in a rock band called Apple Pi.
I also have a day job, but who cares about that?

2) Seen any good movies lately?

I only watch good movies because I have the attention span of a gnat. Recently I enjoyed checking out True Grit (with you), Insomnia (late, I know, but it was the one Christopher Nolan film missing from my repertoire), and the Scott Pilgrim movie which I thought didn't get the props it should've.

3) What are you listening to?

For pump ups on the way to sets, I like Marc Ronson, Daft Punk, NIN, and stand-up comedy albums from comics I admire. For relaxing, I love Zero 7, Jose Gonzales, Metric, Soul Coughing, and my fundamentals, The Beatles and Radiohead.

4) What do you do to relax?

Sleep, read, chat with pals, or murder people in video games.

5) What's your favourite book?

Tough call, books are awesome. Tie between Atlas Shrugged (no I'm not an Objectivist), Breakfast of Champions, and Moby Dick (I'm not bullshitting you, I actually have read it and love it).

6) You order a pizza all to yourself, what toppings do you get?

If there's no topping limit, everything that doesn't have eyes. If there's some kind of arbitrary cap, I'd say broccoli (the King of vegetables), feta cheese, sundried tomatoes, and artichokes.

7) What's your favourite fruit?

Fruit is bullshit, I don't eat it. But technically a green pepper is a fruit 'cause it's got seeds. So I'll say GP.

8) Favourite junk food?

Poutine fo sho. I used to make my own gravies I was so into it.

9) What's the best concert you've ever been to?

Zero 7 at Phoenix in Toronto. They just killed it. And my friends when I wasn't looking talked a techie into giving them the night's setlist for me. Good times.

10) Biggie or Tupac?

They both make really valid points about bitches, popping caps, and the game. Who am I to choose?

11) Who's your childhood crush?

This is embarrassing. I really liked Larisa Oleynik. She's this obscure actress who never went anywhere that was in a kid's show called "The Secret World of Alex Mack." I'm over her now, and finally ready to love again.

12) If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?

On earth? Probably London or Moscow.

Off earth? Oa, son.

13) Any TV shows you're watching right now ?

Always Sunny, 30 Rock, The Office, Deadwood
, and I'm about to get heavy into The Pacific.

14) What's your guilty pleasure?

I get sincerely into things that nobody likes. It starts off as kind of an ironic thing, but always evolves into real, joyful love. Right now that thing is yo-yo tricks. Seriously, the yo yo has gotten crazy in the last ten years.

15) Favourite super hero(es)?

Judge Dredd. So underrated in North America. Spidey was my fave growing up. These days I'm really getting into Jack Kirby's Fourth World stuff. Scud the Disposable Assassin, The Tick, and Grendel are also all awesome characters.

16) What pisses you off?

Rude people, and arrogant people. Also people who have a mean streak, you can see it from a mile away. Aside from that I try to stay pretty zen, dude.

17) Rank these hairstyles from best to worst, fauxhawk, comb over, mushroom cut, mullet.

All of those are great haircuts to a bald man such as myself. You bastards should be happy you've got hair to abuse.

18) Favourite Saturday Night Live cast member (past or present) & why?

If we look at sheer number of awesome sketches I gotta go with Phil Hartman. The guy was unstoppable. I also love Horatio Sanz, just looking at him cracks me up.

19) Saturday morning cartoon you had to watch?

That X-Men cartoon I thought was the boom. I also really enjoyed Care Bears. Not 'cause I'm a priss, but even at a young age I found it hilarious that these cuddly bears that were all about love would gang up at the end of the episode and shoot a beam of love out of their chests, disintegrating the villain violently. The best mixed message ever.

20) Craziest place you've ever done the 'no pants dance' ?

You got me. I've never done the 'no pants dance.' And it's too late for New Years Resolutions, too.

21) Beverly Hills 90210 or Saved by the Bell?

Both amazing with amazing theme songs. Saved by the Bell by a hair, but only because of Max's Diner, the episode where Slater becomes a cook, and the line, "I'm so... I'm so... SCARED!"

22) Favourite artist(s)?

Frank Quitely, Carlos Esquerra, John Romita Jr., Gabriel Ba, Moebius

23) If you were on death row what would your last meal be?

The poutine routine, bro! I'd have to make the gravy though...

24) 20 years from now, you will be _____________?

Laughing at my younger self's predictions

25) How awesome are you? Feel free to use a scale of 1 - 10.

These go to eleven.

Thanks Buxton. Keep on keepin' on.

Young Shaney : Green Lantern Painting

Another acrylic painting from the 2000 era. I think this is the first painting I ever did, excluding elementary school things. This painting is very inspired by one of the first few comics I ever picked up. It was a Green Lantern 3 issue storyline starring Evil Star and his minion's stealing Hal's Lantern.

It was written by Gerard Jones, art by M.D. Bright. Issues 26-28. I still find these old covers pretty amazing.

Warm Up Sketch : King Hippo second attempt

A few days ago I posted a sketch of King Hippo from Punch-Out, but as I looked at it i realized it didn't look good. He looked blubbery and weak. I wanted to do a more menacing Hippo that looks like he could knock you the F out.

Young Shaney : Tick Painting

I recently dug up some more older stuff.

This is an acrylic painting I did in 2000, of the Tick and his pals.

I clearly had a lot to learn about anatomy, textures and lighting but still not the worst thing in the world. This is probably my second ever big painting.

I Can't Get This Outta My Head

His blue suit is just a little too big, he's rockin' white shoes and a yellow tie, but somehow Phil makes it cool.
